20+ Incredible Google Ad Examples to Inspire You in 2022 & Beyond

Best Google Ad Examples-Yatter

Google, what would we do without you, eh?

Don’t know an answer to something – Google it. Want to find the best pizza restaurant in Edinburgh – Google it. Want to find out Harry Style’s star sign to see if you would be compatible… or is that just me?

So much of our lives, our culture and language are influenced by the internet and more specifically Google. So as a business, how can you use this cultural icon, search engine giant to your advantage?

Two words, Google Ads!

At the time of writing, searching ‘Google Ads’ on Google brings up 4,530,000,000 results – with a collection of ads at the top of that list.

Google Ads is an umbrella term for the variety of advertising services Google provides. For example, you could advertise on YouTube, create display ads on other websites or stick to search engine ads. As we swap between websites, between shopping and entertainment, there is a huge opportunity to advertise over different platforms and channels.

Google ads continue to dominate the online marketing business for good reason. Think about it, a customer is searching for something. They are consciously seeking out an answer. If they see your ad during that search, there’s a good chance they’re gonna click it. But that’s only if your ad is good.
So how do we make it good?

Well, luckily for you, we have created a list of 20 incredible Google Ad examples to inspire you in 2022 and beyond.

What makes a great Google Ad?

Firstly, let’s take a look at what key factors can make a Google Ad great. Keep these in mind while creating your own ads.

Keywords

Keywords are the words and phrases you select to determine when your ads appear. For example, if you’re a photographer in Glasgow and you want your ads to show up when someone types in “Photographer in Glasgow”, you could target the keywords around “photographer” and “Glasgow”.

You need to select high-quality, relevant keywords to reach the people interested and who are likely to become your customer. If you target irrelevant keywords, you won’t attract the right audience.

Do some research into the types of keywords and utilise keyword research tools to collect data on trends and keyword competition.

Landing Page

If your ads aren’t working, it might not be the ad itself but rather your landing page.

A landing page is what it says on the tin. It’s a page that your customer will land on after clicking your ad. It’s the entry point to your marketing funnel. They’re typically used to push your customer to take a specific action; purchasing a product, subscribing to a mailing list etc.

You need to make sure your landing page is good though. There’s no point in sending traffic to your landing page that doesn’t convert, it’s just a waste of your time and money.

There are some factors to consider when designing your landing page.

Compelling Title/Sub Title
Image/Video
Enticing Sales Copy
Compelling Call To Action
All Important Info Above The Fold
Social Proof
No Exit Links

Call To Action

So you’ve been creative, you’ve got your keywords, now it’s time to think about your Call to Action (CTA).

CTAs are a really effective way to convert your customer and increase your conversion rates. CTAs give users direction and encourages them to click on your site. If you create a little urgency, you’ll see improvement.

Have a think about what action you want the viewer to take.

This could be signing up to a mailing list, a simple link to buy, starting a free trial etc. The list is endless; it’s up to you!

However, take only one action and make sure you’re driving results – don’t be fluffy. Lead your customer to the path you want them to take.

Search Examples

1. Sounder

Example of Google Ad from Sounder

From the get-go, the word “Free” jumps out. This immediately captures attention before sharing some of the key features of the product. Remember, people searching for ads on Google are searching with intent, so the offer (in this case “free”) is important.

Sounder Agency

Clicking on the link takes us to their landing page. The first thing I noticed was the vibrant colours. There is a clear button to “Get started for free”, which is a great CTA. However, they also include a button to explore which makes Sounder look less pushy.

Audible’s ad is really effective but simple. They are offering a free book in their first line and then below they offer a free 30-day trial. They are pulling their customers in by showing all the wonderful offers they are plain and simply in this ad.

Their landing page then takes you to a “start your free 30-day trial” screen. Audible are really throwing the offer at the customer but they’re sticking to the one consistent offer so it is not bombarding the consumer.

6. Get Harley

Having a think about current trends is another great way to improve your ads. I googled “cruelty-free skincare” and Get Harley popped up first. Their keywords “sustainable” and “skincare” are effective here. “Delivered to your door” is a great attention grabber also. The image of their product on the search ad is a great way to show off their product before the reader has even clicked the ad.

Their landing page shows us the call to action of booking a consultation. This makes Get Harley appear more premium, compared to if they had a simple Buy Now link. Their colour scheme is also clean and professional.

12. The New York Times

Example of Google Display Ad from The New York Times

Linking back to what I had mentioned earlier about trends, The New York Times is commenting on the current media environment and culture of today. They’re acknowledging “fake news” and the way media outlets bias one side or another.

Then they have “Subscribe to The Times” in a contrasting colour to grab the reader’s attention and give them a clear CTA.

Then to the side, you can scroll through their products to discover what they offer. Then they have their Shop Now button which takes you to their selling page.

YouTube

14. Dollar Shave Club

Example of YouTube Ad from Dollar Shave Club

Dollar Shave Club is well known for its viral videos and relatable ads. There are no big budgets or crazy set designs and celebrity endorsements. They take you through everything their razor does while taking the mick out of razors with too many functions and ‘vibrating handles’. It’s very relatable and absolutely hilarious.

Have a look for yourself.

15. Grammarly

Example of YouTube Ad from Grammarly

Grammarly is also great at a bit of comedy. They show their service effectively by having their toolbar appear when Tyler speaks- changing suppository to repository. They show what their service offers whilst poking a bit of fun at how we all need help with our grammar.

Take a look here.

17. P&O Cruises

Example of YouTube Ad from P&O cruises

Back in March, P&O Ferries were in a bit of hot water after they made 786 employees redundant over video link without notice. In the aftermath, P&O Cruises (which are very different companies) received lots of hateful and concerned tweets. This is where their marketing team comes in. P&O Cruises created a video for YouTube and other social media sites clearing up the issue and explicitly saying “we are not P&O Ferries”. The ad was really informative, telling you about their company, who they are under and showing you their service.

P&O

This was a really smart way to distance themselves from the controversy and get some advertising out of it.

Example of YouTube Ad from Hotels.com

Hotels.com are great at ads! This one shows a couple who want to be at one with nature- Hotels.com shows you exactly why not to do that. Example of YouTube Ad from Merge Mansion

And finally, one of my all-time favourite ads ever- Merge Mansion.

Merge Mansion is a mobile game but from their ads, you would think it was a new Netflix series. This ad contains a cameo from none other than Oscar-winner Kathy Bates. The ad shows Bates as Granny doing some gardening before her granddaughter finds a collection of knives and weapons in her shed. It’s such an attention-grabbing ad and leaves you thinking “What did I just watch? Was that Kathy Bates? I need to find out more!”.

Merge Mansion

Youtubers and fans alike have created fan theories and lore about the mysterious granny from Merge Mansions ads alone! Now that is smart advertising. Watch it here!
